Rival Summers - Daisies In A Notebook
I’ve been pretty bummed a lot lately, about a lot of things. I feel really dislocated from a lot of my closest friends and some other really important people in my life and it’s not that things haven’t been good. I just haven’t really felt whole in a while. I’ve been listening to Bon Iver and sitting at the piano a lot the last few days. Writing keeps me sane, it really does. I’m lucky to be able to have the ability to take my thoughts and feelings and turn them into music. I’ve always wanted to be able to write in a journal, but it just never really felt like it was enough.
I just got my piano tuned on Friday, got some new recording equipment on Saturday, and I made this on Sunday. I know it’s only about two minutes long, but I really feel like so much of what I’m feeling right now was poured into this song. It isn’t something I’ll be putting on an album or anything. It’s just something I needed to get out of me.
For anyone curious as to what the story is, it’s actually pretty funny.
In the summer, I’d visit my girlfriend late at night on our monthly anniversaries and every time I would want to bring her some flowers but I never could because it was 3AM and what florist would be open that late? So on the way, I would draw her a daisy on paper I’d tear out of my notebook and write her a note under it. I did that a few times, but I told myself every time, “Next time, I’ll bring her real flowers.” When she left for college, I knew I had to get her some damn real flowers when I came out there.
When the day came, it was a Sunday and I couldn’t leave until about six in the afternoon so I thought I’d be fine if I went to the florist an hour earlier then head out there. Turns out every florist closes at 5pm on Sundays. I got there at 5:02. I figured there has to be even one florist open still, so I drove to every florist that I knew of everywhere. I live in Sterling Heights and I ended up in Royal Oak. Nothing was open.
I was pretty bummed, but I still wanted to bring her something so I drove around some neighborhoods in Royal Oak looking if anyone had some really pretty flowers in their yard. I found this little house with a small garden in the front and I kinda just knew so I parked my car, walked up to their porch, rang the door bell, and a woman came out. I told her the story and asked if I could borrow a flower. I was gonna pay her, but she let me have it. She laughed at me a little, but she was really nice about it. She gave me a little pink flower, I thanked her, then I was on my way.
Moral of the story? I’m a goob.
